390th Strategic Missile Wing

The 390th SMW was activated on January 1, 1962.
Along with the 390th Headquarters Squadron, 390th Missile Inspection Maintenance Squadron (MIMS) and the 570th Strategic Missile Squadron (SMS). The 571st Strategic Missile Squadron was activated on May 1, 1962. All were assigned to the 12th Strategic Aerospace Division, Fifteenth Air Force.

The 571st Strategic Missile Squadron was inactivated on December 2, 1983. The 390th Strategic Missile Wing was deactivated on July 31, 1984 after twenty years, seven months of Titan II alert status.
The design of the 390th Strategic Missile Wing emblem follows USAF heraldry directives. The shield design is reserved for units of flag bearing authority, units with a Headquarters element, Wing, Group, Numbered Air Force or Command.
The gold trim and lettering, traditional AF color. The inner field of red, white and blue, our national colors.The field of blue is also the domain of the Titan's, the sky. The three stars represent the three operational squadrons of the wing, the 390th MIMS, 570th SMS and the 571st SMS. The 390th Headquarters Squadron is assumed by virtue of the shield shape. The olive branch recalls the motto of Strategic Air Command (SAC), "Peace is Our Profession" The missile, representing the weapon system. The gauntlet, represents strength and challenge of mission. The red cloud is unique to the Titan II, oxidizer vapor release during maintenance. The motto of the 390th SMW, "NON NOBIS SOLUM", Not for Ourselves Alone.
The 390th Missile Inspection Maintenance Squadron (MIMS) emblem reflects the disc shape reserved for squadrons and flights. The orange background reflecting the sunset of the Arizona desert . The lighting bolt and the olive branch are elements abstracted from the Strategic Air Command emblem, depicting quick response and the principle of peace. The Titan II is of course, the weapon system. The Roadrunner, native to Arizona. The 390th MIMS motto, "PEREGRINAMUR PRO PACE" We travel for peace.
The 570th Strategic Missile Squadron emblem holds the distinction of bestowed lineage from the 390th Bombardment Group (H) of WWII. The original design was that of the 570th Bombardment Squadron (B-17).
The 571st Strategic Missile Squadron emblem design carries elements of the Arizona desert. The lower field of red representing the mountain ranges thoughout the area. The arrow, a symbol of strength, native American weapon. The upper field of blue, the domain of the USAF. The eight stars and the missile icon represent the nine squadrons of the 571st Strategic Missile Squadron. Bestowed lineage from the 390th Bombardment Group (H), 570th Bombardment Squadron (B-17).
The 390th Strategic Missile Wing has bestowed and direct lineage to the 390th Bombardment Group (H), which flew the B-17 Flying Fortress out of England ,during WWII.
